Glock 17 with a suppressor
Glock 17 is an iconic service pistol — simple, reliable and lightweight. It has been manufactured by the Austrian company Glock since the late 1980s and quickly became popular with police and civilian shooters thanks to its durable polymer-frame construction and proven trigger mechanism. It normally fires 9×19 mm Parabellum cartridges, which offer a good compromise between recoil and stopping power.
When you add a suppressor to a Glock 17 (properly called a “sound suppressor” or “suppressor/silencer”), the shooting experience changes mainly in that the report is reduced, there is less residual muzzle flash, and the shots are perceived as less sharp. This is appreciated by sport shooters, instructors and those who train in indoor ranges. A suppressor, however, does not make a pistol a “quiet weapon” in the Hollywood sense; the bullet impact, the slide cycling and escaping gases still create an audible signature.
On pistols the technical solution often used is a combination of a threaded barrel (so the suppressor can be mounted) and a suppressor designed for pistols or for sub-caliber ammunition. For practical reasons, subsonic ammunition is sometimes used as well to minimize the “crack” of a supersonic shot. From a safety and legal standpoint it is important to emphasize that the use, possession and modification of suppressors are subject to strict rules in many countries — check local laws and procedures before any purchase or modification.
A Glock 17 with a suppressor therefore combines the robustness and simplicity of the Glock platform with a quieter sound profile; for legal sport and training use it is a practical and comfortable solution — of course always with full respect for safety and regulations.
